A: No, single phase motors do not work well with speed controllers. Typically speed control from single phase is done into a frequency drive that converts the single phase input to three-phase output for use with inverter duty rated three phase motors, or controllers that convert single phase input to 90 or 180 VDC for use with DC motors.
