Can this be used as a pump and a second one like it used as a motor? Thinking about building a 3 wheel tryke scooter with 18 hp v twin engine. Powering one of these from engine with a torque converter clutch. Then driving rear axle with other unit. The one used as a motor would be driven from about 700 to 3000 rpm. There are so many different sizes (Cubic Inch), don't know what size I would need???????????? Thanks, Bob in Okla.
A: While pumps are capable of acting like motors at times, their efficiency as such is not as good as a true motor, and depending on the construction there is the risk of blowing out the shaft seal if pressured from the wrong side. It's typically a last ditch, desperate measure. If you want a 1:1 ratio, try to match a true motor to the displacement of the pump. With an 18 HP engine driving it, this pump would only be able to produce about 750-1050 psi before the demand overwhelms the engine and kills it.
