Surplus Means Savings |
|
Burden's Surplus Center is a warehouse distributor for many top name manufacturers. Manufacturers such as Leeson, PowerTeam SPX, Brand Hydraulics, Lion Hydraulics, World Wide Electric, Dynamic and Prince Hydraulics, to name a few. All are brand new items direct from the factory with full warranty and at considerable savings. We also offer surplus equipment in a variety of categories. We buy large quantities of manufacturer's surplus or excess stock. Surplus inventory is usually due to manufacturers design changes, business closings or inventory adjustments. Often these are priced at only a fraction of normal cost. A few surplus items we offer are used but reconditioned, tested and guaranteed by us. All used/reconditioned items are noted as such in the item description.

Thomas Burden, my Grandfather's grandfather, homesteaded near what is now Bladen, Nebraska after the Civil War. Besides farming, he delivered goods to ranchers and farmers as a Teamster.
Thomas and his son James Burden ( my great-grandfather ) started the "James Burden's Cheap Cash Store". James' wife Anna Lockhart Burden had the "Mrs. James Burden's Millenary Store. Both were right on Main Street !

Late 1880's. To meet the coming Railroad, the entire town, first called Pickleville then Wells, was moved a half mile East to the top of the hill and the town name was changed to Bladen, Ne. |

By 1910, James and family moved to Red Cloud, Ne. about 12 miles southeast of Bladen. The Burden store continued operation in Red Cloud until the 1950's |

James had two sons, Darrel and B.C.. After James retired, Darrel operated the Burden Store in Red Cloud, Ne., and his younger brother B.C. (my Grandfather) would help in the store but at a rather young age he went to work for the telephone industry which was just developing in the area. |

B.C. Burden came to Lincoln as an engineer with the Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph Company in the late 1920's. An avid entrepreneur, B.C. soon started an Electric Salvage Company and an Electrical Engineering School. Surplus electrical components were offered for sale as experimenter's kits through the correspondence course books and in articles written for popular magazines dealing with new electrical and mechanical products. The small mail order company started to grow. B.C.'s sons James II and Paul joined their father and built the company into the |

"Nationally Known-World Famous" SURPLUS CENTER |
|
The mail order business started in Lincoln in 1933 or before but it was not until 1953 that it was moved to West 'O' street where we continue to operate today. |
|
Today we have over 150,000 square feet of warehouse space with over 8000 items. We mail several hundred thousand catalogs throughout North America and some catalogs world wide. |

B.C. Burden died in 1982, leaving an abundant heritage of merchandising expertise to his sons, grandsons and great-grandsons. A Nebraska family operating a Nebraska business that blends the best of traditional enterprise with today's competitive marketplace, the Burdens still do business according to those early standards first instilled by B.C's father and later reinforced by B.C. Burden himself: "Treat the people well with reasonable profit to them and to us, and we both shall benefit."
